Just One Mistake!

Incredible! I was just watching the speed skating program with Apollo Ohno, two Koreans, and two Canadians and all I can say is WOW!

While he didn’t get the gold, Apollo did break the record to become the most decorated US Winter Olympian ever – what an amazing feat. What’s even more amazing was how he did it. Three-fourths of the way through the final race, was positioned to take the lead and then it happened… he made a mistake. Or as he says, “Just one mistake!” That one little mistake took away his speed, allowed the two Koreans and opportunity to take first and second place, and put him in last place.

Almost first to last on one mistake. For most people (and the commentator said this for sure), they would have fallen and been out of the race. Apollo, however, was able to stay on his skates, recover, and eventually get a bronze medal and break the US medal count record. It really was an amazing race and I can assure you that everyone who saw it was duly impressed.

A couple things to take note of here is that first, the Koreans took advantage of an opportunity. Apollo also did that in the semi-final heat to qualify for the finals. When you’re working on something, when opportunity strikes, you have to be ready. Whether in life or business, be on the lookout. And when the door is open, go through it. That will ensure you place on the leader board. If you’re not working on anything, then realize that opportunity doesn’t strike. It’s already there. Opportunities are everywhere – you just have to choose one and go for it.

Secondly, mistakes can make or break you. Apollo could have easily given up and said, “oof, race over” and given up. Instead, he persevered, got back into the game and won bronze! Use mistakes to drive you forward. Use mistakes to fuel your fire and get you going and you’ll be amazed at t

he results.

While you may not be nor may never be an Olympian at an Olympic game, you can always be an Olympian in your chosen field. Make the commitment to choose an opportunity, follow through, practice, practice, practice, and learn and grow from mistakes and you’ll win the Gold every time!
