Transformers Vs Voltron! Who Would Win?

So my son (who is a Pokemon Fanatic – he loves all things Pokemon and knows everything about them including evolutions, types, and more) is now getting into Transformers and Voltron!  While Pokemon is always a constant, he’s gone in and out of phases of other cartoons.  The first one was Thomas the Train.  Then it was Angry Birds.  And then Ben 10.  And anything Lego of course.  And now, it’s Transformers… and Voltron!  Of course which one is better?

Well, franchise wise, the Transformers dominate!  Movies, books, multiple cartoon iterations and generations, and of course, the toys!  Ah… the toys!  I remember back when I was a kid growing up in the 80’s I went to a Wal-Mart (with a hyphen back then) and I saw an Omega Supreme toy.  The one that transforms into a working train station like thing and it was 20 bucks!!

Man, 20 bucks was a LOT of money for a poor, broke kid back in the day!  I wanted to get it so bad and I just didn’t have the money!  Well, now I got 20 bucks.  Unfortunately, you know how much it costs now?  Um… more than 20 bucks!!!  This thing is going for over $200 now!!

That’s a 1000% return on investment if I had bought it back then!  What was I thinking?  Of course, the original sells up to over $400 in good condition!  Even more crazy.

Omega Supreme’s big bad that he fought against was Tripticon!  A big city that turned into a Tyrannosaurs Rex type robot.  Trypticon also goes for over $200!

Ah…  a trip down memory lane.  Regardless, the hot thing now seems to be the “Combiner” series.  These are the transformers who “combine” to form a larger robot.  The Original “Combiner” were the Destructicons who combined to form Devastator!   Hey, had you bought it back in the day, it was only $4.44 for each Destructicon.  As there were 6 of them, it would have cost you a whopping $26.64!  Of course today, the original would sell for quite a pretty penny.  The re-issue sells for about $400 on Amazon!

Crazy huh?  By the way, I found a deal on a combiner called Menasaur!  Back in the day, it too was pretty cheap and of course the original is going for a lot.  This re-issue is a bargain price at $74 on Amazon though!  Check it out while it lasts…

Anyway, back to the original question of Transformers Vs Voltron!  Voltron is 5 Lions which “Combine” to form Voltron!  They’re giant Robot Lions that is.  Voltron is the Defender of the Universe and can “Form” a “Blazing Sword!”  The cartoon was pretty cool and the lions of course are pretty cool too!  They did remake the cartoon except there’s  no big movie yet.  Will they make a live-action Voltron movie?  I can only image it would look something like the Power Rangers movie.  Not as flashy as some of the big Transformers movies.  Oh and of course, while it’s “hinted” that these lions have some kind of “personality”, they are actually operated by humans inside of the lion itself.

So sentient alien robots that transform or semi-conscious, human operated giant lions that combine to become the Defender of the Universe?  From a toy perspective, I found a big 16 inch version of Voltron on Amazon selling for a bit over $100.

I have no idea what the original 1980’s version of Voltron would run you now.  I can only image it’s also in the several hundreds of dollars.  Regardless, from a franchise perspective, Transformers wins hands down.  From a toy perspective, when I ask my son do you know what he says?

Well, after some hemming and hawing… he says he likes them both!  So I guess they’re both winners in his book!  While some people might say, “well, that’s not a decision.”  I’ve taught my son that we don’t live in an either / or world.  We live in an “and” world.  And both toys can win in his eyes!  And of course, since I’ve been able to bring home some baco

n, my son won’t have to worry about needing $20 bucks.  Or in this case, $200.  He’ll get both some Transformers and Voltron sometime this year as a reward for doing something good.  Hopefully, he’ll have some good memories of these toys just like I do.
