Waiting For The Government

When he was running for president, Governor Mike Huckabee said probably the best line of the entire convention – Republican or Democratic. He said, “I’m not a Republican because I grew up rich, but because I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life poor, waiting for the government to rescue me.”

Now, I don’t care if you’re a Democrat, Republican, or Independent. Read again the second part of that statement. That’s one of the biggest challenges in America today. Too many people are waiting around complaining about what the government or this country can do for them. They gripe about the economy, about how hard it is to find a job, about how little money they have, how high gas prices are, etc. etc. etc. They don’t realize that America is the land of opportunity.

Now I realize that these are what some may call troubled times… and we are still in the greatest country in the world and anything – I mean anything is possible if you just take the time and make the effort to get up and do something (and yes, I’m talking about the good old U S of A if you haven’t figured that one out yet).

Not happy with your job? Then go find a new one. Not skilled enough to find one? Then go back to school and get a new skill. Can’t afford school? Apply for a grant, study on the internet, go to the library, do an internship. Don’t have enough money for gas, start your own business and get an automatic pay raise through tax deductions – and you can make an extra income while you’re at it. Don’t want to start your own business? Learn about financial management so you can manage your finances better and pay off your bills faster. Get another job temporarily to help pay off your debts. Hey, here’s one, how about canceling your cable TV and reducing your monthly expenses? There are many, many, things you can do!

So the next time you hear yourself complaining about something, pause for a second and ask yourself what

you’re going to do about it instead. Regardless of who the next President will be, don’t sit around waiting for the change that these candidates keep talking about. Instead, get up and make some changes yourself. Take advantage of the opportunity in front of you and go live a wonderful and fulfilling life!

And as John F. Kennedy once said, “ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.”
