Burn The Boats!

“The truth of the matter is that there’s nothing you can’t accomplish if:

  1. You clearly decide what it is that you’re absolutely committed to achieving,
  2. You’re willing to take massive action,
  3. You notice what’s working or not, and
  4. You continue to change your approach until you achieve what you want, using whatever life gives you along the way”

— Anthony Robbins

Tony Robbins says it all in that little bit there.

Notice the first thing he says though – “that you’re absolutely committed”

Commitment is huge!!

Just ask Hernán Cortés who in 1519 led some 600 Spaniards in about 11 boats to conquer the rich, gold filled land called Mexico!  With only 600 men, it was highly unlikely that he would win the battle to defeat the Aztecs.  Instead of charging ahead without a plan, he first motivated his men with speeches.  And then he ordered them to “Burn the Boats!”

Burn the Boats

If he and his men were to fail in their endeavor, this strategy could backfire and there would be no retreat.  Instead of scaring his men, this one act motivated them and absolutely committed them to the task of defeating the Aztecs – and it worked!

They had no other option except to win.  This is complete commitment!

You can decide to do a lot of things

and until you commit yourself to doing it, it will never happen.

We know people who say that they’ll do a lot of things.

Quite frankly, talk is cheap.

Commitment is key.

What things are you committed to doing?

More importantly, how committed are you?

Think about it.

“Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.” — Foster C. McClellan
